CASS AND KATE

CASS – Me & Kate want to say goodbye to Mum or Aunty Sue from the kids point of view.

KATE – We thank her for her kindness, open-mindedness & her love of all things beautiful.

CASS – Whether it was a song or a bird or a flower.

KATE – We picked five of her favourite songs to play today,  songs that she loved & that we feel represent what a beautiful, interesting & amazing woman she was.

CASS – As we were walking in today, we heard Pearly Shells. This is a favourite of the Sanders clan. We also played it at the funerals of Nan & Pa. So it was only fitting that we would play it today.
Then we heard Wooden Heart by Elvis. When Mum was a little girl she had a series of pets die in a short amount of time, the last being her gorgeous little puppy. Mum was devastated & told her teacher what had happened, & asked would the puppy go to heaven. The teacher told her not to be silly – of course dogs don’t go to heaven. This upset poor little Susan even more. She told me that she went home & played Wooden Heart over & over again. For the rest of her life it reminded her of her puppy.
We are not a religious family but know that Mum is now with her puppy…………… & Gizmo the turtle, Buckets the lizard & all of the dogs, ducks, birds, bunnies, fish, frogs, ladybeetles, snakes, snails & hermit crabs that shared our home.

KATE – And Jim would like to add that Sue said he did great Elvis impersonation.
The last song was Bird Gerhl, one of Sue’s favourites of the past few years & a love of birds was a passion that she shared with Mark. We would like to think that the lyrics in this song describe the journey she has now taken.

‘I’ve been searching for my wings sometime
I’m gonna be born into the sky
‘cause I’m a bird girl
And the bird girls go to heaven’

CASS – As we leave the hall we will listen to a song by a lovely Hawaiian man whose name I can’t pronounce. Mum heard this song on TV many years ago, & like all the things she loved, she had to have it.
This was before we knew much about the internet, I remember her describing & desperately trying to find it. Eventually Isaac Barnett figured out what it was & gave her a copy. She was so excited & played it constantly. To me this song has always been about her. She had an optimistic vision for the future, for humanity & for Mother Earth. Right up until the end she believed that dreams could come true

KATE – Sue was a wonderful mother to Jo, Cass and Ben and her love for them was totally unconditional. She was also the best aunty and great aunt you could ask for. On top of all of this she was a great friend to all of us kids. In the end it was her that needed looking after and Mark and the kids did not let her down.  Sue, you would have been so proud of your babies.
Next we will hear Fire & Rain. When I hear this song, it reminds me of time spent at the Pomroy house. Jim & I spent almost every weekend there, and those are some of our best childhood memories. Many times Sue would drag out her old records & introduce us to some of her favourite tunes. They have now become favourites of all of ours. Fire & Rain is one of those that takes me back to that time spent with her.
We love you so much and we will never stop missing you.
